Before you read these, please note the five letter word above that starts with M. These are myths – you know – blarney, nonsense.
1. You will live the same life style after divorce as before divorce. Math has no place in a court of law.
2. Don’t worry about what the court papers say. It’s just paperwork. You can always change it.
3. Child support is no big deal. Seriously, what’s the worst that could happen if you don’t pay it?
4. Court orders are more like guidelines. You don’t have to obey them if you don’t feel like it.
5. If your estranged spouse is giving you lots of legal advice that includes the phrase “no judge in the world will ever….”, then they must really know what they are talking about. You should listen to them instead of your lawyer.
6. It’s okay to lie to your lawyer. Just use the word “alleged” a lot and everything will be fine.
7. Any property you want to keep is worthless junk. Frankly, your spouse should be paying you to take it off their hands. Any property your spouse wants to keep is priceless. They could spend the rest of their lives paying you for your half, and it still wouldn’t be enough. In fact, to make it even, you are going to need a lot more worthless junk.
8. It’s not the money, it’s the principle. True, you are allergic to that cat, and it bites you every chance it gets, but there is no WAY you should ever let your spouse have it.
9. EVERYTHING is worth litigating. There is no small stuff. Sweat it all.
10. If you get to have a trial, remember to say “I do not recall” as often as possible. It really impresses judges. In fact, the more you say it, the better you look.
